Contrary to popular belief and the single story, Haiti is a beautiful country. This single story is based on the negative representation of Haiti throughout the media, similar to the single story of Africa.
This week I watched “Divided Island: How Haiti and the DR became Two Worlds” by Vox and “A Love Letter to Haiti” by Passport Heavy. The first video was in my opinion a sad video with negative connotations of Haiti but it was essentially just on the history and what the people of Haiti have gone through. The second video was a lot more positive and it was my favorite between the two. It highlighted the beauty and culture of Haiti, a side many people, like myself, haven’t seen before. After watching the video I wanted to visit Haiti myself.
I don't want to give too many details of the Passport Heavy video away because if interested, I think people should watch it for themselves so I've linked it below.
Both of the videos and their goals are important so I am not downplaying the Vox video. As I stated, they were simply explaining Haiti's history and experiences which is key to educating people. From my experience, there's a lot more information and news speaking negatively on Haiti so when it is brought up people's minds tend to think about the bad things. "A Love Letter to Haiti" was my first time seeing Haiti in a positive light and I loved it. It's a beautiful country bordering the Dominican Republic which is a popular vacation destination. Due to the representation of Haiti on the media, they have a lot fewer tourists than their neighboring country even though they're on the same island. The video featured a group of people who travel frequently visiting Haiti and they loved it.
One day I hope to visit Haiti and take in all of the country's beauty!
