As I reach the end of this semester and my COMM300 Communication and the Black Diaspora course, I find myself filled with excitement. The exploration of the rich African culture and communities throughout this course has not only educated me but has sparked a fire within me.
Before this class, a trip to Nigeria had already been a longtime dream of mine. COMM300 has only furthered my desire. My grandfather is a Nigerian man and he currently lives there despite previously moving to the U.S. where he and my grandmother met and got married. We don't talk often but when we do I love hearing his accent and how he's doing in Nigeria. The main reason my family and I haven't visited is because he doesn't want us to due to the political climate and safety risks.
This course has helped me realize that Nigeria is only one piece of the puzzle. We looked beyond Africa into countries like Brazil and Haiti. Discussions about "Cubop" and Brazil's Carnival made me want to explore those places and other ones. There are of course the popular travel destinations like Hawaii and Bora Bora that people want to visit for the aesthetic. However, I want to travel to expose myself to a new culture and expand my horizons. Moving forward, it is my mission to travel and explore new places. I want to begin saving money this summer so that I can do these things as soon as possible!
